Timing (Building Custom Homes, Part 1 of 4)
We here at Barrister have been building custom homes and communities in Northern New Jersey for decades, and we like to think we’ve learned a thing or two over the years—and in this blog series about building custom homes, we’d like to share a little bit of that wisdom with you.
First off, we know that building a custom home can be an exciting endeavor. You have the chance to build the house of your dreams. However, the process may seem overwhelming because a lot goes into it. In this series, we’re going to look at a few important topics to think about when considering the custom home-building process:
- Part 1: Timing, or “How long is this going to take?”
- Part 2: Design and Layout: ideas and suggestions for designing the layout of your custom home
- Part 3: Energy efficiency: how to ensure your custom home is energy efficient
- Part 4: Long-term care: important tips for caring for your custom home
Timing
At this point, you’re probably thinking, “Great. So how long is this going to take?”
Of course the answer is going to be, “It depends,” because every job is different. However, we can estimate that, in our experience, most custom homes take 10 to 24 months to build. Semi-custom homes, or large renovation projects, might take 6-8 months, though more work will, obviously, require more time.
The amount of time building a custom home takes really depends on the size of the house. The size of the team to build the house may also speed up the construction timeline of the house. If your custom home has complex features, it may extend the time to build the house.
However, keep in mind that despite how much time it takes, it is important not to cut corners because you will save money and time in the long run when the job is done correctly and carefully in the first place.
Care & Precision With Barrister
We at Barrister have built a reputation for stellar work by using high-quality materials and keeping a keen, close eye to detail. We are methodical and exacting, which is why people love living in the homes we build for them. If this means our estimate puts the entire building process a bit longer than another contractor, we can promise the results will be well worth it.
Most contractors will come in with fairly similar estimates for the timing of your custom home in New Jersey, but if someone estimates that the project will take drastically less time, then we would advise caution before hiring them. At least do a bit more vetting and get some other quotes and try to understand how or why they believe they can do the job so quickly. You want to live in your house a long time, with minimal problems down the line, so a few more months at the beginning of the process will provide much better results in the long run.
